Sean McAuliffe - Ph. D. Tutor

Who I am

For the last 5 years, I have been teaching courses in statistics, research methods, cognitive psychology and cognitive science in the psychology department at U.C.L.A.. I received a Ph. D. in cognitive neuroscience in the psychology department of U.C.L.A. in June of 2000. From 1984 to 1994, I worked as a systems analyst in Philadelphia and Chicago. I graduated from Dartmouth College in 1984. I grew up in Massachusetts where I participated in many math competitions. On a personal note, my wife and I live in West L.A. with our lovable terrier Martin (I have successfully tutored Martin in Calculus and Trigonometry, but he is still having difficulty mastering Spanish as he has trouble rolling his ‘r’s).

My approach to tutoring

I like to apply as many techniques as possible to maximize student learning. For example, cognitive psychology has shown that memory is enhanced by such techniques as imagery, spacing, active participation, and depth of processing. New learning is also easiest when it connect with existing knowledge – so I try to learn a bit about my students so I can present new info in a way that can be tied to pre-existing concepts. I am also very aware of the anxiety that many students have regarding their academic performance and try to ease their concerns with humorous examples when appropriate.

Who my students are

I tutor students from age 12 and up (adults welcome) in the following subjects:

Math (all levels – e.g., Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus)

Statistics (all levels)

Psychology (all levels)

Science

The business of tutoring

Many clients prefer for me to tutor them at their home. I charge $100 for 90 minute sessions for an in-home visit (somewhat more if home is greater than 5 miles from west Los Angeles). For those who prefer to see me at my home office, I charge $75 for a 90 minute session. To determine if my tutoring fits your needs, I offer a free 30 minute evaluation session with no obligation.
